Parking lots are a popular area where criminals target women. Frequent cases of robbery, snatch thefts, rape, kidnap, assault and more are reported from parking lots. The most dangerous of car parks are those located at remote, quiet and unguarded areas. Here are a few tips every woman should know when in parking lots to avoid any undesired incidents from occuring.

Pick a safe parking lot

If you have choice, park in areas where there are closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, security guards or gated compounds.

Do not dally or linger when walking to your car

The moment you are get out of your car, lock your car and walk directly away from the car park area to a more crowded area along vehicle lanes, never in between the parked vehicles

Park in a lighted area

Even if you are parking in the daytime and expect to leave before night fall, the chance you might be late will always be there. Thus avoid dark areas and look for areas with ample lighting.

Ensure your car is locked

You doors and windows must always be closed and locked when leaving your car. The moment you enter your car, lock your doors immediately.

Enter your car immediately

When you are by your car, unlock your car and enter it immediately, locking the door when you are in. Do not hesitate or linger around.

Avoid enclosed areas

When walking to the car park, avoid taking enclosed staircases or walkways. Its safer to walk along the ramp or vehicle lanes.

Pick parking lots nearer to entrances.

Hide valuable items

Do not place valuable items like watches, jewellery, wallets and handbags in clear view in your car. Store it away in the glove box or in the boot.

Look around the car park area

Keep a constant watch out around the area of the parking lots before entering it. Be wary of anyone sitting in cars or suspicious characters wandering around the area or looking at you.

Park near pedestrian walkways

Pick lots near to pedestrian walkways as such areas would have a lot more people walking around and is thus safer.

Ensure you can see your car

If you have to stop your car to park at an autopay machine, ensure your car is always visible and locked. Prepare change so you do not have to leave your vehicle for too long.
